Antibiotic Growth-Promoters in Food Animals

چکیده
By Peter Hughes and John Heritage, University of Leeds, UK There has been a developing controversy surrounding the use of antibiotics as growth promoters for food animals. These drugs are used at low doses in animal feeds and are considered to improve the quality of the product, with a lower percentage of fat and a higher protein content in the meat. Other benefits of the use of antibiotic growth-promoters include control of zoonotic pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli and enterococci.

Antibiotics in Canadian poultry productions and anticipated alternatives
The use of antibiotics in food-producing animals has significantly increased animal health by lowering mortality and the incidence of diseases. Antibiotics also have largely contributed to increase productivity of farms. However, antibiotic usage in general and relevance of non-therapeutic antibiotics (growth promoters) in feed need to be reevaluated especially because bacterial pathogens of hu...
متن کاملThe Food Production Environment and the Development of Antimicrobial Resistance in Human Pathogens of Animal Origin
Food-borne pathogens are a serious human health concern worldwide, and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant food pathogens has further confounded this problem. Once-highly-efficacious antibiotics are gradually becoming ineffective against many important pathogens, resulting in severe treatment crises. Among several reasons for the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance, their overu...
متن کاملControlling Gut Health without the Use of Antibiotics
During the past 50 years, the livestock and poultry industries have developed in several areas including nutrition, genetics, engineering, management, and communications to maximizing the efficiency of growth performance and meat yield. Now these industries must focus more attention on how animal agriculture affects the environment and food safety. As in many other industries, the global paradi...
متن کاملExperience of feeding pigs without antibiotics: a European perspective.
The use of antibiotic growth promoters has been questioned in Europe for several decades. The concern has mainly been related to the risk of creating antibiotic resistant microorganisms that can be transferred to humans. The ethical justification for feeding antibiotics to ‘‘healthy animals’’ has been debated as well and during the last decade, the growing consumer demand for ‘‘green’’ food pro...

The aims of this study were the comparative study of probiotic, acidifier, antibiotic growth promoters and prebiotic on activity of humoral immune and performance parameters of broiler chickens.500 one day old male broilers (308 Ross strain) were divided into 5 groups: A, B, C, D and E. Each group with equal numbers of male included 4 replicates (25 chicks per replicate). Group A was as control ...
